My backyard is all caliche and hardpan. Will artificial grass drain properly?

Yes, but only if the base is built right. Caliche sheds water instead of absorbing it, so we grade the yard to slope away from your house, install a perforated base layer, and compact it so water moves sideways and out. We never lay turf on bare caliche or dirt. A proper base is what keeps your turf from pooling, smelling, or failing in five years.
